Hydroponic Basics

By Castulo Zane

What materials are required for a hydro grow show? Is it difficult to construct one? Where can you find the stuff you need? How handy do you have to be?Can you get creative about it?

It's quite straightforward. You need a container, an air pump, a water pump and a bunch of hose. All of these things are easy to buy. They're simple to hook up. You can be as creative and complex as you like.

We'll begin with the container. You can handle containers in three ways. One container can hold everything. You can use two containers, a reservoir and a holding pot.Or you can create a multiple container system.

With a single container system you combine the pot that holds the plant with the reservoir. You mix the solution in, for example, a five gallon bucket, and pump it into the grow medium above. It flows over the plant roots and growing medium and then drips back to the reservoir portion of the system. The pump and air pump are kept in below the roots. The system is small and simple. The drawbacks are that you have to remove the plant to access the pumps or change the solution, and the roots can grow into the pump.

The two container approach needs more room. But, servicing the pumps and hoses or changing the solution is much easier. It's also good to keep the roots away from the pump. Most important you can access the hardware without moving the plants.

A bigger system has one reservoir that supplies many plants. With this set up you don't have to move any plants to change or test the solution or get to the pumps. If you have room it's a good system.

Multiple, two or single container is your decision to make. Each method has its good points and bad points. Make your choice and get to work.
