Would You Like to Be Better at Giving Back Massages?

By John Linguini

Everybody would like to get a massage but not everybody feels comfortable giving them to someone else. We're afraid of accidentally hurting the other person. We are afraid that we might not help enough. We're scared that other people will dislike what we are doing. You will be glad to hear that any person can learn how to give a terrific massage each time they want to do just that. Here is how you can give a great back massage every time you would like to.

First, you need to make sure that the person is comfortable while lying down. The surface on which they are lying down must be firm but soft. You don't need a table but try having them lie down on the bed. If they are on your floor, put down a mat or some soft blankets or towels so that they will feel more comfortable. If the person wishes to keep his or her shirt on, make sure that it is of a soft material so there will be less friction and scratching.

Start out with some basic rubbing. Using the full flat side of your hands, rub gradually up from the lower back area toward the neck. This rub has to have at least a bit of pressure in it but don't try to use your full massage pressure yet. Start at the the lower back and then move your hands up the back then across the shoulders and then back down the back. As you keep doing this, make each "loop" of the back smaller so that you are sure to get to all areas of the back.

Using the heels of your hands offers you a good way to offer fantastic and pointed pressure. Using the heels of your palms to apply pressure, begin working in little circles at the base of the back on either side of the backbone and then work those little circles out toward the person's sides, up a little bit and then back across to the spine and upward until you have massaged the entire back area.

Sit at the side of the person receiving the massage. Then, set one hand on top of the other and thrust into the back a little bit with your fingers. Start at the spinal column and push steadily and with firm pressure across the back away from the spine and then lightly sort of move your hands back across the back toward the spinal column and move upwards. Repeat the process as you work your way up the back and then repeat on the other side.

Massage the spinal column. Start at the base of the spinal column and work up each of the sausage-y muscles on each side of the spine with your fingers or your thumbs. Rub each little node at least five times to create some friction before moving on to the next. Work your way all the way up one side of the spinal column and then do the same on the other side of the spine.

Something that you need to bear in mind as you use every one of these techniques is that it is a good idea to re-relax the person between each part of the massage that you give. This means that after using one technique, perform the basic rub that you used at the beginning of the massage for several minutes.
