Skills And Responsibilities Of A Certified Nursing Assistant

By Faye Hunter

Giving assistance to nurses in caring for the patients are the main responsibility of a certified nursing assistant Tulsa. From this primary responsibility comes many other secondary duties that require certain skills from the medical professional. Among the necessary skills are the required trainings and seminars on the proper treatment of patients both in the physical and emotional aspects.

There are community colleges and vocational schools that offer aide training programs to high school graduates. After completing the course, the students can apply for certification in one of the certifying boards accredited by the state. There are also registered nurses and doctors that are certified by the state to train students as aides.

One of the most common skill required from an aide is the proper way of transferring and lifting of the patients. During the process, they should also ensure that neither they nor the patient suffers any injuries. The students attending the classes are taught the proper technique that does not bank on too much force.

The administration of basic personal care is also included in the trainings that an assistant undergoes to provide better care for the patients. Personal hygiene activities that include bathing and eating are discussed. This is another necessary skill since most hospital and nursing home residents could not do these basic activities without the help of other people.

It is the obligation of the aide to provide their patients with the emotional support that they need in the low moments of their lives. During hospital rounds, it is included in the list of duties of the aide to take all vital sign readings. This can also be done more frequently depending on the recommendations made by the attending doctor.

It is also the duty of the certified assistants to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of their assigned areas. Therefore, it is their duty to change the bed linens, and clean up the area after a feeding session or other activities that may have disturbed the orderliness of the room. It is also the responsibility of the aide to dispose of hazardous and toxic waste to minimize the danger of spreading infections.

The recording of all procedures and actions related to the care and treatment of the patient is included in the daily routine of the nursing aide. All medications and prescriptions given to the patient must be recorded for reference. The vital signs and fluid input and output are also included. If there are any changes in the status of the patient under their care, the assistants are tasked to inform the registered nurse on duty or the attending physician.

Most nursing aides report for 40 hours every week. However, they are also subjected to different shifts as with all the medical personnel that works in a hospital. There are also aides that choose to work in private homes providing private personal care for older members of the family.

Private employment can be a full time contract of just part time. It can also be a stay in position or a day care position only. Compensation for the assistant position is lower than that given to registered practical nurses or nurses since the position does not require extensive medical training and education to be a certified nursing assistant Tulsa.
