Portugal Flag History Today

By Bob Gales

The national flag of Portugal was officially adopted on the 30th day of June 1911. It is known to be a rectangular bicolor, with red and green for its national color combination. The colors are divided unevenly, with red on the fly and green on the hoist. The boundary between the two colors is designed with the Portuguese coat of arms.

The designs have been done in the earlier years but it was only in June 1911 when the flag was officially adopted. The official adaptation of the flag was done after the constitutional monarchy’s downfall. The design was also selected by a special commission which included Joao Chagas, Abel Botelho and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro in its members.

The red section represents the Portuguese revolution of 1910 and the green represents hope. The white shield consists of five blue shields with five white dots. The blue shields represent the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques I, victory over five Moorish kings and the divine assistance he received to do so is represented by the five dots, which symbolize the five wounds of Christ.

After decades of using the flag, the colors are finally known to have a lot of representation for the Portuguese. But among its most popular representations are hope for the nation which is represented by green and the blood of those people who died while defending the nation, which is represented by red.

The armillary sphere symbolizes the triumphs of navigation of the "Age of Discoveries" when Portuguese ships set out on voyages to South America, Africa, and the Far East from the 15th century onwards. The red, yellow, white and blue Portuguese shield within the armillary sphere is a resonant symbol of Portugal's early history as it battled to free itself from the dominion of its Moorish conquerors.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Portugal flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Portugal future.
