What You Should Know About Proper Trailer Storage

By Deborah Cole

Trailers serve different purposes to different people. No matter your reason for living in a trailer, you need to ensure that it is stored properly. Do not just assume that it will be in the exact condition you leave it in when you come back after a long time if you did not prepare for the storage. Read on for tips on proper trailer storage.

You need to leave it clean. A final cleanup should be done the day before or on the exact day you move out. The seals should be perfect too. Waxing all the joints ensures that sun damage is kept at bay. Also, there will not be much build up of dirt. If there are broken or worn out pieces, replacing them before leaving is advisable.

Ensure there is good air circulation inside the container too. Moisture issues lead to growth of mold which takes a new level of expertise to deal with. The smell is not awesome and you will have to spend a lot of money to fix the situation. By installing a number of vents on the roof and leaving them working when you close down the trailers, the air flow will be maximum. In addition, rain will not find its way into the trailer.

Mold growth can also be combated by fixing curtains and blinds. The shades should be translucent in order to allow for some amount of light penetration. By drawing all the curtains and blinds, you might think that you are protecting the items inside from sun damage. In the real sense you are doing exactly the opposite.

Items which are slide-outs should be retracted before the storage. The rubber seals, slide toppers, roof and mechanical parts will not be damaged when retracted. However, it will not be the case when left in place. A corrosion protector has to be applied in order to protect against corrosion. Baby powder can be applied in-between to ensure that they do not stick together.

Pests are found all around the globe. The only difference is the kind of rodents found in the varied regions. Rodents and bugs are quite common. To keep them away, external openings need to be sealed completely. Bugs prefer air intake-piping, furnace exhaust, the exterior part of the vent and fridge panel and also the plumbing vents at the rooftop. Be extra keen when checking these spots.

Gadgets which are powered by electricity must be turned off. Also, all the lights in the trailer should be switched off. The main system can be turned off if the electrical energy is not needed by any crucial system. In case of batteries, wires must be disconnected so that the battery energy does not get drained off. There is no point in using a lot of money in power when it is not serving you in any way.

Temperature is an influencing factor when it comes to plumbing. When they are too high or low, the pipes are likely to burst. When the storage will be for a couple of week, s the pipes can be left with about a quarter of the water they can hold. When the temperatures are really low, an anti-freeze can be added. Another option is to flush all the water out.
